What Is Overnight Interest?
Overnight interest is a financing charge or interest adjustment that may apply when certain leveraged forex or CFD positions are held past the platform's stated settlement time. It is also called a swap or rollover charge. It is not simply the two countries' interest rates subtracted and paid directly to the client: a platform may add a markup, financing costs or other adjustments. The amount ultimately posted to the account depends on trade direction, contract size, reference rates, holding days, the platform's calculation and product terms. Some accounts or instruments may use a different fee structure.
A Simplified Example
Suppose a trader buys a currency pair and the reference interest rate of the purchased currency is higher than that of the sold currency. In theory, the interest-rate differential may benefit the long position; the reverse position may incur a charge. However, the actual result may differ if the platform includes a service markup or financing cost, or if the rates change. Both long and short positions may incur charges. Overnight charges are often calculated on notional exposure or contract quantity, not only on the margin deposited, so leverage can magnify the cost relative to account capital. Over a long holding period, small daily charges can accumulate into a significant cost.
Why Can a Multi-Day Charge Appear?
Forex markets have settlement-day conventions, and around weekends or public holidays a platform may apply several days of financing adjustments on one business day. Users often call this a “triple swap.” The day and multiplier are not universal; instruments, settlement calendars and platform arrangements all matter. The charging methods for equity CFDs, indices, commodities and crypto-related contracts may also differ, so do not apply one currency pair's rules to every product.
Checks Before Placing an Order
- Check the product specification or trading terminal for the daily long and short rates, calculation units and update time.
- Confirm the platform's daily cutoff and holiday adjustment days; a position held across the settlement time may incur a charge even if it is only a few minutes.
- Estimate the cost of holding the actual position for a week or a month and allow for rate changes instead of assuming the current quote will stay fixed.
- Check whether the account has an interest-free overnight arrangement, including its conditions, additional costs and restrictions.
Overnight interest may be income or an ongoing expense. Even if a position nominally earns interest, it does not offset exchange-rate movements or guarantee a profit. If displayed charges differ from actual debits, retain order and settlement records and verify them with the platform.
