Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA): Overview and How to Search

Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA)
1. What is the MFSA?
The MFSA is Malta’s single financial services regulator. It regulates banks, insurers, investment services and other financial activities within its authorisation scope, and performs its functions within the EU financial supervisory framework. Different services are subject to different licences and EU rules.
2. Key responsibilities
- Licensing and supervising financial services providers in Malta.
- Monitoring licensed entities’ business conduct, governance and compliance.
- Maintaining financial-market stability and publishing public warnings.
3. How to check an authorised institution
MFSA Financial Services Register: Financial Services Register
- Search by the company’s legal name or licence information and confirm its status.
- Review the licence category, service scope, address and restrictions.
- Use contact details in the register to verify websites and callers, and watch for clone firms.
4. Important points
Registration status and service scope can change. A Maltese or EU licence is not a product recommendation; investor-protection arrangements should be checked separately for the specific entity and product.
5. Official information

Refer to the latest MFSA register information.
6. Verifying Maltese authorisation and cross-border services
The MFSA Financial Services Register can be used to check the category, status and service scope of entities authorised in Malta. If a firm claims to provide cross-border services in other countries under EU rules, confirm whether the register shows the relevant arrangement and which legal entity it concerns. A group’s licensed company in Malta does not mean that every website, subsidiary or agent using the same brand is operated by that entity.
Compare the contracting entity, the party safeguarding account funds, website links and registered address, and check MFSA warnings and regulatory decisions. Deposit protection and investor compensation schemes have different eligible entities and conditions. Do not infer that a particular product or customer is protected merely from the phrase “MFSA regulated.” If the website, phone number or recipient of funds does not match the register, pause payment and independently contact the firm through the MFSA website. Keep the date of the search and relevant records for a possible complaint or enquiry.
Register checks and cross-border services
In the MFSA register, check the licensed entity’s legal name, licence type, permitted activities, status and restrictions. Do not assume that a company may conduct a business merely because its name appears in a search. If the institution serves customers in other EU countries, further confirm whether the register includes the relevant cross-border arrangements and whether the service is provided by the Maltese entity or another group company. A regulated entity within a group does not automatically confer the same authorisation on other entities.
Investor compensation, deposit protection and insurance protection cover different types of institutions and products. Check eligibility on the MFSA or relevant scheme’s official website; do not treat regulatory status as compensation for every loss. Compare the registered website, contracting company and payment account. If the information does not match, pause payment and contact the MFSA directly. Keep the search date, contract and communications so the actual transaction relationship can be explained if you make a complaint.
